Receiver hitches, gooseneck hitches and trailer wiring by vehicle
This is the hub for everything towing. The grid is dominated by Draw-Tite and CURT, the two brands with the most vehicle-specific listings: CURT 4-flat custom wiring for cars and crossovers like the 2015-2020 Toyota Sienna and 2012-2021 Subaru Impreza, and Draw-Tite receiver hitches, Hide-A-Goose gooseneck heads rated 20,000 to 30,000 lb, ball mounts and pintle hooks. B&W adds Class 3 and Class 5 receivers, TorkLift adds front receivers and stainless steel EcoHitch receivers for EVs, and Tekonsha and Hopkins supply the brake controllers and vehicle harnesses.
Two numbers decide most hitch purchases. The class, 1 through 5, sets the weight range the receiver is built for. The receiver opening, 1-1/4 inch on Class 1 and 2 and 2 inch on Class 3 and above, sets which ball mounts and accessories fit.

Choosing the right trailer hitch and wiring
Work from the trailer back to the vehicle. Note the trailer's loaded weight, tongue weight and coupler size, and whether it has electric brakes. Check the tow rating in your owner manual; the hitch class must cover the trailer, but the vehicle's rating is the ceiling. Choose the receiver class and confirm the opening, then the ball mount drop that keeps the trailer level. A 4-flat is enough for lights only; brakes need a 7-way and a brake controller. EVs and hybrids usually need a powered module in the harness, which the product page will state. If you are not sure what fits, contact us with your year, make, model and configuration.
Common questions
What class of trailer hitch do I need?
Class 1 and 2 for cars and small crossovers, Class 3 for SUVs, minivans and half-ton trucks, Class 4 and 5 for full-size and heavy-duty pickups with heavy trailers. Always confirm your vehicle's own tow rating, which is often lower than the hitch.
What is the difference between a 1-1/4 inch and a 2 inch receiver?
The opening size, which determines the accessories that fit. Class 1 and 2 hitches use 1-1/4 inch, Class 3 and up use 2 inch. Adapter sleeves let a 1-1/4 inch bike rack go into a 2 inch receiver, but never the other way.
Gooseneck or fifth wheel?
A gooseneck uses a ball in the truck bed and suits horse, flatbed and equipment trailers; a fifth wheel uses a kingpin and jaw plate and is the standard for RV fifth wheels. Both need the underbed mounting kit for that truck.
What is the difference between 4-flat and 7-way trailer wiring?
A 4-flat carries running lights, brake lights and turn signals. A 7-way adds electric brakes, reverse lights and 12 volt power, and is what campers and trailers with brakes use.
Do I need a brake controller?
Yes, if the trailer has electric brakes; without a controller they do nothing. Surge-brake trailers, common on boats, do not need one. Proportional and time-delayed controllers are in the Tekonsha collection.
